Monthly Meetup Inspires Plant-Based Pop-Up

Monthly Meetup Inspires Plant-Based Pop-Up

[Charleston, South Carolina-September 17] Since March, Black creatives, entrepreneurs, and millennial have joined together for Convened: The Dropping Pin Meetup. The monthly meetings, led by David White Jr. (Founder of The Dropping Pin), is now a popular minority-based networking event—that has recently inspired a plant-based pop-up on Sunday, September 29.

“Through word-of-mouth and social media, ‘Convened’ continues to grow…and so does the number of inquiries we receive about hosting the meetups somewhere more vegan-friendly,” White expressed.

So, to kick off Fall/Winter season, White will host Convened: The Dropping Pin’s Vegan Pop-Up. In collaboration with his longtime friend Sterling “Chef Sterl” Chisolm, the pop-up will feature a fun and bold menu that will include: Sweet Potato Skins, Notchos, Pulled porkless, and Loaded Mac N Cheez.

“Sterling and I became friends years ago, and he’s always enjoyed cooking. I’ve tried several of his dishes that included plant-based options and they all are great,” White added. “He’s currently the Executive Chef at The North Charleston Marriott and we’ve spent time going over different recipes. We’re not only excited about the pop-up but looking forward to hosting at The Rib Guy.”

Located in the heart of Downtown’s North Central Neighborhood, The Rib Guy, is well-known for their burgers, ribs, and other grilled favorites. However, the owner (Guy Simmons Jr.) is also looking forward to the vegan dining experience with The Dropping Pin and Chef Sterl.

“This [pop-up] will be an opportunity to show our community that a plant-based is not only healthier… but can be fun as well,” Chef Sterl said. “[African-Americans] have always been told that disease runs in our family. But this is my chance to tell you something else…some of these diseases aren’t always hereditary, but what we are used to eating is. We must break the cycle.”

Convened: The Dropping Pin’s Vegan Pop-Up will begin at 5:00 p.m. Reservation are not required; menu items will be available on a first come-first served basis. The Rib Guy is located downtown at 396 Huger Street.  For more information visit thedroppingpin.com

Chef Sterl

The exuberant Chef Sterling Chisolm, known locally as Sterl is not new to the Charleston food scene. Chef Sterling has been cooking for 12+ years and grew up here in our very own Downtown Charleston. Chef Sterling made the decision to become Vegan when he realized disease is not hereditary but what we put in our body. “I want to be around as long as possible for my 2 children.” Chef Sterling believes in the “Back to Nature” mentality and is focused on making delicious dishes that are not intimidating to beginners.  In his spare time, he focuses on coming up with plant-based alternatives for your everyday lifestyle.
